The Côte-Rôtie "La Brocarde" 2023 is an exceptional 100% Syrah, sourced exclusively from the La Brocarde lieu-ditin the heart of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. This wine was produced as a single-vineyard cuvée only in the 2023 vintage, as Frédéric and Maxence Gallet considered the quality of the parcel so remarkable that it deserved to be bottled separately rather than blended into the Trio de Brune.
The vineyard is planted on steep, southeast-facing slopes and trained using the traditional échalas system, where each vine is supported by an individual wooden stake. The soils consist of highly decomposed mica schist, rich in sandy elements, a combination that brings exceptional freshness, finesse and aromatic precision. All grapes are harvested by hand.
After harvest, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks, with 30% whole clusters included to add complexity, structure and spice. Prior to fermentation, the must undergoes a 24-hour cold maceration, followed by fermentation at a controlled temperature of 28–30°C. Gentle pump-overs (remontage) are carried out twice daily to achieve a precise and balanced extraction of colour, aromas and tannins.
The wine is then aged for 24 months in 228-litre Saury French oak barriques that are two to three years old. This restrained oak ageing enhances the wine's complexity while allowing the purity of the terroir to shine through.
La Brocarde stands out for its remarkable balance between aromatic intensity and finesse. The bouquet combines ripe black fruit, fresh herbs, sweet spices and delicate floral notes, while a subtle hint of rose petals adds an unexpected touch of elegance. The palate is generous yet refined, with a silky texture, vibrant freshness and a long, savoury finish. Although already highly seductive in its youth, the wine has the structure, concentration and balance to evolve beautifully over many years.
